Extension/Renewal of Study Permit
When do you require extension or renewal?
You need to consider renewal/extension in the following common circumstances:
- Your program lasts longer than originally planned — e.g. due to course load changes, co-op placements, program extensions, or delays.
- You finish your studies later than expected, but your permit expiry date is approaching or passed. In that case you need to extend.
- You plan to begin a new program (or continue studies) — e.g. after a bachelor’s, to pursue graduate studies. That requires a new/extended permit under the new letter of acceptance.
- You change schools (transfer between institutions / DLIs) — if you change to a different designated learning institution (DLI), you need new study permit.
- Your school’s status changes — if the institution you attend loses its “designated learning institution” status, you cannot get an extension under that institution.
Summary
- Apply to extend/renew if you want to continue studying beyond your current permit’s expiry.
- Submit application at least 30 days before expiry (ideally 3–6 months ahead).
- Ensure you remain in Canada while waiting to maintain legal status.
- Renewal is needed when program duration changes
- New Study Permit required when you switch schools, or plan further studies — and you must meet requirements.
